What makes P + P different?
We’re not recreating school outdoors — we’re reimagining what education can be when children lead the way.
Why we learn this way…
Where the woods become the classroom…
When we started this journey back in February 2025, we didn’t have our own space. We met under two big oak trees at a local park, holding hope and determination that we would one day find a place to call our own. By mid June we were already hard at work on our dream space with our dream landowners, a partnership that has enriched our community and deepened our learning experience in ways we could not have imagined.
For a forest school program like ours, the land truly becomes another teacher. We now have access to 1.5 acres of beautifully wooded and open play spaces including our mud kitchen, nature trail, mini wildlife pond, and a future garden space. Beyond our home base, we regularly explore local parks and preserves, immersing ourselves in the flora and fauna of our wider ecosystem. We also welcome field experts from conservation and nature programs who share their knowledge and stories, helping expand children’s understanding through real world connection.
Each space is intentionally designed to invite curiosity, movement, and imagination. Logs become balance beams, mud becomes art, sticks become stories. Everything around us can be explored, questioned, and transformed.
How learning happens here
“Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children, play is serious learning.” — Fred Rogers
Our days follow a gentle rhythm, a balance of freedom and flow. Children arrive and settle into unhurried play, finding their own pace in the natural world. We gather to share ideas, build together, create, and rest. The day expands and contracts like nature itself, predictable enough to feel safe, open enough to stay wild.
Every tool, material, and moment is chosen with purpose: to inspire open-ended exploration. There’s no single “right” way to learn here, just endless opportunities to wonder, build, experiment, and grow.
How we learn
At Palmetto + Pine, learning begins with curiosity. Our approach is child-directed and place-based, allowing children to follow their interests while the natural world becomes one of their greatest teachers. The environment invites exploration, questions, creativity, and discovery in ways no classroom ever could.
We believe in the value of risky play, giving children the opportunity to test their limits, build confidence, and develop resilience in a supportive environment. Our learning is also emergent, meaning experiences and projects grow from the children’s interests, the season, and what we discover together in the forest.
Above all, our programs are inclusive by design. We intentionally create spaces where every child and family feels welcomed, respected, and able to participate in ways that honor who they are
